How Partnership with Tony’s Place Is Changing Lives Year-Round

Over the past decade, the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce has worked to bring businesses and community together in ways that create real, lasting impact. That work is rooted in a simple idea: when we show up for one another, we all move forward—stronger, bolder, and together.

Our collaboration with Tony’s Place reflects that vision in action. While our work together has grown in recent years, it represents the kind of connection and collaboration the Chamber has been building since day one—linking businesses with organizations on the front lines to ensure resources, support, and opportunity reach those who need them most.

From the Chamber Holiday Food & Supply Drive to new opportunities for consistent, year-round support, this collaboration has helped create stability, dignity, and care for LGBTQ+ youth across our region.

Meeting the Moment — The Impact of the Holiday Food & Supply Drive

What has it meant for Tony’s Place to be connected to the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce as a nonprofit member?

Being connected to the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce as a nonprofit member has meant being part of a strong and supportive community that believes in the importance of uplifting LGBTQ+ organizations. The Chamber has provided Tony’s Place with an invaluable platform to share our mission and connect with leaders, businesses, and advocates across Houston who care about the well-being and success of LGBTQ+ youth.

Through our involvement with the Chamber, Tony’s Place has been able to increase our visibility and build meaningful relationships throughout the LGBTQ+ business community. The Chamber has created opportunities for us to recruit new board members, engage volunteers, and secure in-kind donations that help strengthen our programs and operations. These connections have also helped us grow our base of financial supporters, increasing monetary donations that allow us to expand our impact.

Equally important, the Chamber fosters a spirit of collaboration between businesses and nonprofits. Being part of that ecosystem has allowed Tony’s Place to form partnerships that support our long-term sustainability and growth. For us, the Chamber is more than a network. It is a community that actively helps organizations like Tony’s Place thrive and continue serving LGBTQ+ youth in Houston.

“For us, the Chamber is more than a network. It is a community that actively helps organizations like Tony’s Place thrive.”

From your perspective, why is it important for nonprofit organizations like Tony’s Place to be engaged in a business-focused organization like the Chamber?

“The Chamber creates a space where those connections can happen in a meaningful and productive way.”

It’s incredibly important for nonprofit organizations like Tony’s Place to be engaged with a business-focused organization like the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce because real community impact happens when the nonprofit and business sectors work together. The Chamber creates a space where those connections can happen in a meaningful and productive way.

For Tony’s Place, being part of the Chamber allows us to build relationships with business leaders who want to invest in the well-being of the LGBTQ+ community. Those relationships often translate into support through board service, volunteerism, in-kind contributions, and financial donations that strengthen our ability to serve LGBTQ+ youth.

The Chamber helps bridge awareness between the business community and the work nonprofits are doing on the ground. When businesses understand the challenges facing LGBTQ+ youth and see how organizations like Tony’s Place are making a difference, they are more likely to become engaged partners in that work.

Ultimately, collaboration between nonprofits and businesses makes the entire community stronger. The Chamber plays a vital role in fostering those partnerships and ensuring that organizations like Tony’s Place have the relationships and support needed to grow our impact.

Why This Work Matters Right Now

The Chamber Holiday Food & Supply Drive has supported Tony’s Place for several years now. What kind of impact has this initiative had on the youth and young adults you serve?

The Chamber Holiday Food & Supply Drive has had a tremendous impact on the youth and young adults we serve at Tony’s Place, both in terms of meeting immediate needs and strengthening our overall capacity to serve the community.

Each year, the Chamber and its members donate thousands of dollars’ worth of in-kind goods, including food, drinks, clothing, and hygiene supplies. These donations significantly impact our budget because they allow Tony’s Place to redirect funds that would otherwise be spent on basic staples. Having those essential items covered means we can invest more resources into programs, services, and support for the young people who rely on us.

I often share the story that during the first year of the Chamber’s drive, the amount of supplies we received was so substantial that we had water and toilet paper for over a year. It was an incredible example of the Chamber community showing up in a big way. More recently, however, the demand for our services has grown dramatically. Over the past year or so, Tony’s Place has seen about a 400% increase in client services. As a result, the donations from this past holiday drive, while still incredibly generous, lasted us only until March.

“During the first year of the Chamber’s drive, the amount of supplies we received was so substantial that we had water and toilet paper for over a year.”

That shift really highlights both the growing need in our community and the importance of initiatives like the Chamber’s Holiday Food & Supply Drive. The continued support from the Chamber and its members ensures that we can keep our shelves stocked with essential items and continue providing a welcoming, supportive space for the youth and young adults we serve.

The Need is Great

Are there specific needs that the Holiday Drive has helped meet that might otherwise have gone unmet?

Absolutely! This year, the impact was especially significant thanks to a generous donation from Amazon, which provided 12 pallets of supplies. The donation included a wide range of items from water and canned food to laundry detergent and vitamins that directly support the day-to-day needs of our clients. Having these staples on hand allows us to ensure that young people who come to Tony’s Place have access to basic necessities in a consistent and reliable way.

The donation also included electronics, jewelry, and other items that we were able to use as holiday gifts for our clients. For many of the young people we serve who celebrate Christmas, the holidays can be a difficult time. Some do not have family, and for those who do, their families often have limited financial resources and are unable to provide many presents.

Because of the Holiday Drive and the generosity of donors like Amazon, we were able to celebrate the winter season with a little extra joy this year. Being able to give gifts and create a sense of celebration meant a great deal to our clients and helped ensure they felt seen, valued, and supported during the holidays.

Building an Ecosystem of Support

What does it mean to your team and to the youth you serve to see the business community show up in such a tangible way during the holiday season?

Right now, there is a lot of difficult rhetoric and policy conversations happening that directly impact LGBTQ+ people, especially here in Texas, where we are seeing legislation aimed at restricting and marginalizing trans youth. That broader climate can be incredibly heavy for the young people we serve, many of whom are already navigating complex challenges and are very aware of the conversations happening about their identities and their rights.

Because of that, when the business community steps up the way the Chamber and its members do through the Holiday Drive, it sends a powerful and very personal message. It tells our youth that despite the negativity they may hear in the news or in politics, there are still many people in their community who see them, support them, and are willing to stand with them in real, tangible ways.

“It tells our youth that… there are still many people in their community who see them, support them, and are willing to stand with them.”

For our team, that support is equally meaningful. It reminds us that we have partners who believe in our mission and who are willing to invest in the well-being of LGBTQ+ youth. And for the young people we serve, these acts of generosity help create moments of care, dignity, and belonging during a time of year that can otherwise feel very isolating.

Seeing the business community show up like this reinforces that our youth are valued members of this community, and that there are many people working to ensure they feel supported, safe, and hopeful about their future.

How does consistent community support — like the Holiday Food & Supply Drive — strengthen your ability to plan and serve year-round?

Consistent community support truly makes a meaningful difference in how we plan and serve throughout the year. When we receive large donations of staple items like water, canned goods, hygiene products, and other essential supplies, it relieves a significant financial burden for our organization.

Because we don’t have to spend as much of our budget on those basics, we’re able to redirect resources into areas that have an even deeper impact on the youth and young adults we serve. For example, those savings allow us to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat so we can provide healthier, more nutritious meals. It allows us to think beyond just meeting immediate needs and instead focus on supporting overall wellness.

It also helps us expand our staffing capacity so we can provide more one-on-one support. Many of the young people who come to Tony’s Place have very individual needs and having the staff time to sit down with someone, listen, and help them navigate challenges is incredibly important.

In addition, the flexibility created by this kind of community support allows us to grow programs that foster connection and creativity like our art group, which provides youth with a safe and expressive outlet and helps build community among their peers.

When the Chamber and the business community come together through initiatives like the Holiday Food & Supply Drive, it does much more than stock our shelves. It creates the financial and operational breathing room that allows us to invest in healthier meals, deeper support, and meaningful programs that enrich the lives of the youth we serve all year long.

Monthly Support

We are excited to share that, through the Chamber’s relationship with Amazon, Tony’s Place will now receive a monthly donation of food and supplies. What does consistent, monthly support like this mean for your organization?

Consistent, monthly support like this is truly transformative. Having a reliable stream of food and supplies through the Chamber’s relationship with Amazon gives us a level of stability that many nonprofits rarely get to experience.

“Having a reliable stream of food and supplies gives us a level of stability that many nonprofits rarely get to experience.”

When donations arrive consistently, it allows our team to plan ahead rather than constantly reacting to shortages. We can ensure that essential items are always available for the youth who rely on Tony’s Place. It also helps us manage our inventory more effectively and avoid the uncertainty that can come with one-time or seasonal donations.

Financially, knowing that many of our core supplies will be replenished monthly allows us to redirect funding toward areas that directly enhance the lives of the youth we serve.

Consistent monthly support sends a powerful message to our team and to our youth that the community is committed to them not just during the holidays, but all year long. That reliability helps us create a more stable and supportive environment where young people know they can come back month after month and find the resources and care they need.

What message does this kind of corporate and Chamber partnership send about what’s possible when businesses and nonprofits work together?

This kind of partnership sends a very powerful message about what’s possible when businesses and nonprofits work together with shared purpose. It shows that when the private sector and community organizations align around a common goal, the impact can be immediate, practical, and far-reaching.

“When the private sector and community organizations align around a common goal, the impact can be immediate, practical, and far-reaching.”

For Tony’s Place, partnerships with the Chamber and companies like Amazon demonstrate that businesses are not just observers in community issues, but also they can be active participants in creating solutions. Their resources, networks, and commitment help nonprofits expand what we’re able to do and reach more people in meaningful ways.

It also shows that collaboration multiplies impact. The Chamber serves as a bridge, bringing together businesses that want to give back with organizations that are directly serving the community. That connection turns goodwill into real support.

“The Chamber serves as a bridge, bringing together businesses that want to give back with organizations that are directly serving the community.”

Perhaps most importantly, this kind of partnership sends a message of inclusion and shared responsibility. It shows that the well-being of LGBTQ+ youth and the strength of our community are not just nonprofit priorities, they are community priorities that businesses are willing to stand behind.

How has being part of the Chamber ecosystem expanded awareness of Tony’s Place and the work you do?

Being part of the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce ecosystem has significantly expanded awareness of Tony’s Place and the work we do in the community. The Chamber has created opportunities for us to share our mission with a much broader audience of business leaders, professionals, and organizations who may not have otherwise known about Tony’s Place or the needs of the youth and young adults we serve.

Through Chamber events, networking opportunities, and partnerships, we’ve been able to tell our story, build relationships, and connect with people who want to support our work. Those connections have translated into new board members, volunteers, in-kind donations, and financial contributions that help strengthen our programs and expand our reach.

The Chamber has also helped elevate Tony’s Place’s visibility within Houston’s business community. By being part of this ecosystem, we are able to engage with leaders who are committed to giving back and investing in organizations that are making a difference locally.

What would you say to other nonprofits considering joining the Chamber?

Being part of the Chamber has truly been a game-changer for us. It has opened doors to relationships, resources, and opportunities that have helped strengthen and grow our organization in ways that would have been difficult to achieve on our own. The visibility the Chamber provides within Houston’s LGBTQ+ business community has also helped us expand awareness of our mission and connect with partners who want to make a real difference.

The Chamber has been essential in helping create a bridge between the nonprofit and business communities. Many businesses want to give back but don’t always know how to connect with organizations doing the work on the ground. The Chamber helps facilitate those relationships, turning goodwill into real, tangible support.

Looking Ahead

As we enter the Chamber’s next decade, what excites you most about continuing to be engaged with us?

We are excited about continuing to be engaged with the Chamber, growing together and deepening the impact.

Over the past ten years, the Chamber has proven to be a powerful convener, bringing together businesses, nonprofits, and community leaders who are committed to supporting and uplifting the LGBTQ+ community. For Tony’s Place, being part of that ecosystem has been essential to our growth, and it’s exciting to think about what the next decade of collaboration could look like.

“It’s exciting to think about what the next decade of collaboration could look like.”

I’m especially excited about continuing to build strong partnerships between the business community and organizations like ours. As stated before, when businesses invest their time, resources, and leadership into the community, it creates real opportunities for organizations like Tony’s Place to expand programs, reach more young people, and strengthen the support systems around them. These types of partnerships are the solution!

If you could describe the impact of the Chamber’s support in one word or short phrase, what would it be — and why?

Transformative
