Why Visibility Matters: The Lasting Impact of a Pride Flag

Chamber Member Chris Blackwell shares how one Pride flag in their neighborhood became a powerful symbol of safety, acceptance, and belonging.

At the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, we know visibility matters — in our businesses, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities. Sometimes, visible support shows up in bold public moments. Other times, it shows up in something as simple as a Pride flag in a front yard.

We’re proud to share this reflection from Chris Blackwell, with Chamber Member One Innovative, who reminds us that visibility is never just symbolic. For someone who needs to know they are seen, valued, and not alone, a visible sign of Pride can become a powerful message of safety, hope, acceptance, and belonging.

By Chris Blackwell

In 2018, my husband and I bought a home in Montgomery County. In our master-planned community, there wasn’t a single Pride flag in sight. We decided to put one in our yard — not to make a statement, but simply to show visibility, representation, and pride in who we are.

Like many people in the LGBTQ+ community, we expected there might be a few negative reactions. And there were. A handful of comments appeared on neighborhood social media pages.

"But what surprised us most was the overwhelming support from neighbors who stood up for us, defended us, and reminded us that kindness is often louder than hate."

Then, in 2020, something happened that we will never forget.

One evening, we found a handwritten note tucked beneath a rock on our walkway. It was from an 11-year-old girl in our neighborhood. Along with the letter, she left us a drawing.

In her note, she shared how much our Pride flag meant to her. To us, it was simply a flag in our yard. But to her, it represented safety, hope, acceptance, and love. It made her feel seen.

"That moment stayed with us because it was a powerful reminder that visibility matters."

Sometimes the smallest acts — a flag in a yard, a welcoming smile, a kind word, or a visible show of allyship — can have a deeper impact than we ever realize.

Her letter is proof that even the simplest gesture of support can leave a lasting impact and remind someone that they are not alone, that they are valued, and that they belong exactly as they are.

"During Pride Month and every month after, that is why visibility matters."

Thank you to Chris for sharing this meaningful reflection and powerful reminder of why visibility matters.

At the Chamber, we see every day how visible support for the LGBTQ+ community creates connection, builds belonging, and strengthens the communities where we live, work, and do business. This story is a beautiful reminder that visibility is not just symbolic — it can be life-affirming.

We are grateful for Chamber Members, like Chris, who not only show up and lead with authenticity, but support the Chamber’s work and mission.
