As President Donald Trump’s flurry of executive orders sparks fear in communities across the U.S., some in Houston say they have already begun to feel the sting.
The Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce was scheduled to host an event at the Houston location of the Federal Reserve Thursday, but leaders said they scrambled to find a new venue at the last minute after Trump banned Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives throughout the federal government.
"It was a gut punch," said Tammi Wallace, co-founder, president and CEO of the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce. "Here's an event that's about businesses. It's about our economy; it's about supporting small businesses that are working hard ... so to get this email was very painful. It was very painful reading that, especially considering everything we've seen in the last few weeks — just knowing this is what's happening, and this is what's happening in our country."
