Chamber Hosting Holiday Food Drive to Support LGBTQ+ Seniors

"This is truly a wonderful example of companies, community organizations and individuals coming together to collectively work together so LGBTQ+ Seniors have food on the table for the holidays.”

HOUSTON, TX (December 3, 2021) – The Greater Houston LGBT Chamber of Commerce and its supporting Foundation will host a food drive to raise donations to support LGBTQ+ Seniors. The food will be donated to Chamber Member, the Montrose Center, to support the holiday boxes program for LGBTQ+ Seniors in need.  Since the announcement about the food drive in early November, there has been an amazing response from sponsors, community partners and media partners stepping up to support the Chamber Holiday Food Drive and truly bringing new meaning to the food drive theme: “Together we can beat hunger for LGBTQ+ Seniors”.

The Title Sponsor for the Chamber Holiday Food Drive is Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages.  The company has made a tremendous commitment both in terms of financial support and product donation to support the food drive.

The food drive will be held on Friday, December 10, 2021, with two drop-off locations (morning and afternoon).  Anchor Sponsors for the food drive are Eureka Heights Brewery and SignatureCare ER.  The food drive, supported by many sponsors, community partners and media partners, is an opportunity to give back to LGBTQ+ Seniors who have given so much back to the community.

The need is great to make sure LGBTQ+ Seniors have food on the table during the pandemic and especially during the holidays. For the Chamber, the Holiday Food Drive is about community and giving back during the holiday season. The Chamber is using its resources to bring together business and community to support LGBTQ+ Seniors this holiday season.

"Since the announcement of the Chamber Holiday Food Drive, the community has responded in so many ways to support our LGBTQ+ Seniors and commit to helping us make the food drive as impactful as possible,” said Tammi Wallace, President & CEO. “This is truly a wonderful example of companies, community organizations and individuals coming together to collectively work together so LGBTQ+ Seniors have food on the table for the holidays.”

The holiday season is a time people gather around festive meals to celebrate and give thanks with family and friends, but for many of LGBTQ+ community members, this season can be difficult emotionally and financially. With twice as many LGBTQ+ community members aging alone in relation to their heterosexual and cisgender peers, seniors experiencing food insecurity, face the difficult task of providing a holiday meal while still making sure they have enough groceries for the week.

“Continuing the tradition of filling holiday food boxes this year for LGBTQ+ Seniors would not be possible without the support of organizations like the Greater Houston LGBT Chamber of Commerce and the Foundation, said Kennedy Loftin, Chief Development Officer, the Montrose Center. “All of us here at the Montrose Center are truly honored that the Chamber has chosen to host, for the second year, a Holiday Food Drive to supply essential items for our annual Holiday Meals distribution.”

There is also a Virtual Food Drive for those unable to drop-off food - they can make a donation via the Virtual Food Drive.  Donations can be made at http://www.chamberholidayfooddrive.lgbt/.
