Chamber Mourns the Loss of Transgender Activist, Journalist and Pioneer Monica Roberts
We celebrate Monica’s life and legacy. Rest in Power, Monica.
HOUSTON, TX (October 8, 2020) – The Chamber mourns the loss of transgender activist Monica Roberts. She passed away unexpectedly in Houston this week. We celebrate her life and legacy and express tremendous gratitude for her work and fierce advocacy on behalf of the community.
Monica was a talented journalist and the creator of TransGriot, a blog that she described as “A proud unapologetic Black trans woman speaking truth to power and discussing the world around her since 2006.” Monica won numerous awards for her pioneering activist work and her journalism. She was a native Houstonian. Monica’s work on behalf of the transgender community as well as the entire community reaches across the globe through her words and actions.
“Losing Monica is devastating and especially in Houston where the community had the privilege of seeing her passion and work in the city she called home,” said Tammi Wallace (she|her), Co-Founder and President & CEO. “Monica was a leader, force and shero in the TLGBQ+ community. She always led from the front and worked to make the world a better place for those that would come after her. Monica's legacy is in every blog post she wrote, every life she touched, every elected official she held accountable and in every story that will be told from this day forward about her advocacy and her impact.”
We celebrate Monica’s life and legacy. Rest in Power, Monica.
