Chamber Will Host Third Holiday Food Drive to Support LGBTQ+ Seniors
“In 2021, the Chamber Holiday Food Drive provided 15,789 free meals to LGBTQ+ seniors...”
HOUSTON, TX (November 16, 2022) – The Greater Houston LGBT Chamber of Commerce and its supporting Foundation will host a food drive to raise donations to support LGBTQ+ Seniors in need. The food will be donated to Chamber Member, the Montrose Center, to support their holiday boxes for LGBTQ+ Seniors. Together we can beat hunger for LGBTQ+ Seniors. With the theme “Look What We Can Do…TOGETHER!” the Chamber is asking the community to come together and give back this holiday season.
The food drive will be held on Friday, December 2, 2022, with three locations this year (morning, mid-day and afternoon). Anchor Sponsors for the food drive are BUDDY’S, Eureka Heights Brewery and SignatureCare ER. For the past two years, the Chamber Holiday Food Drive raised the largest amount of food and funds the Montrose Center has ever received in its history benefitting LGBTQ+ Seniors. Because of the generosity of hundreds of food and virtual donations, the Montrose Center has been able to increase the number of Holiday Boxes for LGBTQ+ Seniors and fill up multiple pantries as well as support other programing.
In 2021, the Chamber Holiday Food Drive provided 15,789 free meals to LGBTQ+ seniors of the Law Harrington Senior Living Center, an LGBTQ-affirming housing center, and other non-residents through the Montrose Center programs.
"For the past two years, the Chamber has hosted the Holiday Food Drive to support LGBTQ+ Seniors and others who are in need. We step up because our community needs support. No senior should ever go hungry and we're doing our part to bring community together this holiday season to make sure our LGBTQ+ seniors have food on their tables.
Through the Chamber Holiday Food Drive over the past two years, the Montrose Center has received the largest food drive donations in its history. This is what impact looks like and giving back to community. Look what we can do...TOGETHER!" - Tammi Wallace, Co-Founder, President & CEO
The holiday season is a time people gather around festive meals to celebrate and give thanks with family and friends, but for many of LGBTQ+ community members, this season can be difficult emotionally and financially. With twice as many LGBTQ+ community members aging alone in relation to their heterosexual and cisgender peers, seniors experiencing food insecurity, face the difficult task of providing a holiday meal while still making sure they have enough groceries for the week.
“Continuing the tradition of filling holiday food boxes this year for LGBTQ+ Seniors would not be possible without the support of organizations like the Greater Houston LGBT Chamber of Commerce and the Foundation, said Kennedy Loftin, Chief Development Officer, the Montrose Center. “All of us here at the Montrose Center are truly honored that the Chamber has chosen to host, for the third year, a Holiday Food Drive to supply essential items for our annual Holiday Meals distribution.”
Those unable to donate food on the day of the food drive can donate via the Virtual Food Drive at http://www.chamberholidayfooddrive.lgbt/. Visit http://www.chamberholidayfooddrive.lgbt/ for a full list of Food Drive Sponsors and Media Partners.
