December 16, 2024

The Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce is proud to endorse the Protect Intersex Children Act, introduced by Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia. This landmark legislation reflects a critical step forward in safeguarding the rights and well-being of intersex individuals. It aligns with the Chamber’s commitment to fostering inclusivity, equity, and dignity for all members of the LGBTQ+ community, including those whose experiences and identities have been historically marginalized.

Intersex individuals, like all people, deserve the right to bodily autonomy and protection from unnecessary medical interventions performed without informed consent. By introducing the Protect Intersex Children Act, Congresswoman Garcia has demonstrated her dedication to advancing human rights and ensuring that decisions regarding medical care are driven by the best interests of the individual. This legislation preserves the ability of intersex individuals to make choices about their own bodies when they are capable of doing so.

“In addition to being a moral imperative, protecting the rights of intersex individuals carries significant economic benefits. Discrimination and exclusion create barriers to education, employment, and full participation in the economy for intersex individuals,” said Tammi Wallace, Chamber Co-Founder, President & CEO.  “By ensuring equitable treatment and respect for bodily autonomy, this legislation helps lay the groundwork for intersex individuals to thrive and contribute fully to our communities. A more inclusive society fosters innovation, attracts diverse talent, and strengthens the overall economic fabric.”

Inclusive policies are good for business, driving economic growth and competitiveness while reducing costs associated with health disparities and discrimination.

By endorsing this legislation, the Chamber affirms its belief that a truly inclusive community is one where all voices are valued and respected. Protecting the rights of intersex children is not just about fairness and equality but also about fostering a stronger, more dynamic economy where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

We commend Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia for her leadership in championing this critical legislation. The Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce stands in solidarity with intersex individuals, their families, and advocates working to end harmful practices and create a more just society.

Together, we can create a world where every child, regardless of their biological traits, grows up with the freedom, respect, and opportunities they deserve, while building a more inclusive and prosperous economy for all.
