Statement on the Supreme Court Decision in 303 Creative v. Elenis

Houston, TX (June 30, 2023) – Today, the Supreme Court’s decision in the case of 303 Creative v. Elenis reflects that, once again, the LGBTQ+ community is treated like second-class citizens in our country in every aspect. Every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect in all aspects of life, including business transactions and commercial services.

Striving for an inclusive business environment, where everyone can thrive, is critical to a successful economy where all communities are free from discrimination. Building an inclusive, diverse, and prosperous business landscape that values and respects every individual, no matter who they are or whom they love makes our country and economy stronger.

This decision should serve as a reminder that despite the progress made in recent years, discrimination against LGBTQ+ people is pervasive in our country. We must remain vigilant in our efforts to combat discrimination in all its forms. It is imperative that we continue working towards a society where no individual is denied services, turned away, or treated unfairly because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The Supreme Court decision underscores the pressing need for the Equality Act, which is comprehensive legislation to ensure consistent and explicit protections against discrimination for LGBTQ+ individuals.

We urge Congress to pass the Equality Act, which would provide the necessary safeguards to prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in all aspects of public life, including the commercial marketplace.

Together, let us send a resounding message that discrimination has no place in our society or in the business community. We remain committed to working towards a future where every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, is afforded the same opportunities and protections.
