Bao Ong (he/him)
Restaurant Critic, Houston Chronicle


This month, we’re spotlighting one of the most dynamic sectors of Houston’s economy — the restaurant industry.  We're excited to have Bao Ong, Restaurant Critic for the Houston Chronicle, as our featured speaker for an engaging and insightful conversation on Houston’s ever-evolving food scene.

Bao will share an insider’s perspective on what it really means to be a restaurant critic, his journey to the Houston Chronicle, and his take on Houston’s restaurant landscape — including how our city is viewed on the national stage (think James Beard Awards!).

Bao Ong is a restaurant critic for the Houston Chronicle. He moved to Houston in the summer of 2022, and in his first year as a restaurant columnist, he won the top award in the Comment and Criticism category awarded by the Texas Managing Editors organization. He previously worked on staff at Eater New York, Bon Appétit and Time Out New York. 

In addition to Bao's background in journalism, he also graduated from the French Culinary Institute. Bao is part of the LGBTQ+ community and he brings this community lens to his work as well. Follow where he's eating and drinking on Instagram: @baohaus
